Pig Rock Bothy

Challenge:

Design a permanent yet moveable exhibition for The Pig Rock Bothy, a small building and art piece in the main gardens of The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The exhibition needed to activate the space, tell the building’s story and withstand extreme temperature changes.

Approach

Inspired by the eclectic nature of real bothies and the work of resident artist Laura Aldridge, we created an installation that guided visitors through the space. We researched and specified a variety of pleasing materials to convey different aspects of the narrative and meet the practical challenges of the space.

Outcome:

The exhibition successfully activated the otherwise empty space for over three years before the Bothy was moved from its site. The design effectively addressed the challenge of the environment and remained fresh throughout its run, proving easy to store and set up.
