Challenge:
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art was looking to to help families engage with and enjoy the NOW exhibitions more easily together. There were a series of 5 NOW exhibitions in total, running across three years and they wanted a consistent template for guides to populate with new questions each time. They had bought paper already and liked the idea of an A3 french folded to A5. So that’s where we started!
Approach
We researched the gallery’s audience, branding, exhibition themes and artists, we then generated ideas. The chosen route was based on the idea of ‘fun frames’ which we would swap out to match the theme of each new exhibition. To meet production budgets we used the limitation of 2 spot colours to reduce printing costs but also as a constant across the exhibition guides to give them their own identity.
Outcome:
Liaising with couriers, printers and paper merchants to organise the final pieces delivery to the gallery. The guides helped families to navigate the galleries and aid discussion around the artworks. There were several print runs as they proved extremely popular with over 1000 printed each time.
